What I Wore Wednesday

What I Wore Wednesday
I am SO not good at this but I AM trying. Taking pictures of myself is half my battle. Either because it's so awkward, or I forget, or I feel like I don't have decent place in this house to take the picture.
Above:
Sweater: Old Navy
Pink Tank: Wal Mart
Necklace: Lia Sophia gifted from My Sister
Not pictured: Jeans that are too tight for a pic & SUPER comfy sweater boots

This was one of my best outfits all week & this is how I felt when Andy snapped the pic...so this is what ya get!
It's a cowl neck sweater dress that I wore with my black leggings & 12" black bearpaw boots

Left:
Shirt: Maurices
Necklace: Me
Black Pants: Express

Right:
Shirt: JCPenny
Scarf: Maurices
Jeans: Levis from Kohls

Andy hates this outfit.
He says "giddy-up cowgirl" EVERY time I wear it.
I just reply with a "yeeehaw!"
Vest: Handmedown from My Sister
Necklace: Handmedown from My Sister - love it!
Bracelet: Made of Wood - Goodwill
Jeans: Maurices
Boots: Handmedown from My Sister

Are you seeing a trend? My sister supplies quite a bit of my wardrobe...her,Maurices, JCPenny & Goodwill. That's the beauty of having a thrifty sister :) What she doesn't like once she gets home often comes to my house!

As usual I'm linking up to The Pleated Poppy's What I Wore Wednesday
I don't feel half as cute as Lindsay & the other girls that post for WIWW, nor do my pictures look as clear & professional as theirs...but participating really has gotten me out of that frumpy rut that I've been in since Eli was born (A YEAR AGO!!!) That, and it's SO much fun to browse around the other blogs...and envy what everyone else is wearing! I LOVE FASHION...I'm just not very good at it!

If anyone is ever interesting in GUEST POSTING on my blog for What I Wore Wednesday, let me know! I'd love that!

My Sister, The Thrift Store Rock Star

Meet my sister Michelle (& my brother in law Patrick),
The Thrift Store Rock Star
Recently, Michelle started blogging all of her great buys & projects. I always knew she was talented & now I'm so excited that she's sharing her awesomeness with everyone. Let me tell ya, if anyone can find a rock bottom deal, it's her. She's got an eye for bargains & for flipping trash into treasure.  Check out her blog - you'll enjoy it:  http://thriftstorerockstar.blogspot.com/

She makes me want to go buy something from Goodwill or Craigslist & spray paint it!

Actually, I have a few pieces of furniture in my garage that could use a little touch by my rock star sister...hint hint...here's one that cost us $10 on Craigslist last summer. Is it worthy of a makeover & a place in our living room? Or is it hopeless & better left in our garage??
What do you think???
Suggestions or ideas????

Brainstorming a Birthday Party!

Our baby will be a year old this Sunday!!
That's only SIX days away!!
It's hard to believe that was 365 days ago...feels more like 5!

I have yet to do any major party planning. Can you believe that?
I have the essential details pinned down...like location & time. Fortunately, all the guests know about it...but I failed big time on making invitations. It's true that the youngest often gets the short end of the stick :( I know he'll probably never care, but I do! I love planning parties! But with 3 little guys under me all the time, it's difficult to be productive with something like making invitations.
(hellooo I'm busy sewing pj pants people! hahaha).

So today I've been browsing around online looking for decoration ideas for what I wanted to be a Curious George party. For past birthdays we've had a variety of themes: Zoo Party, Farm Party, Sports Theme Party, Elmo Party, Dinosaur Party & Toy Story Themed Party... This time around our family voted to celebrate the Curious George way & Eli clapped his hands in approval!

BUT I'm sad to report that the nearest stores to where I live don't have one single Curious George party item...and I don't have the time or extra cash to be running around to other cities to shop.

With only SIX days till the party, I'm freaking out a little bit. So I called my mother-in-law. She's the cake queen in our family & will be making Eli's cake. She helped me process my thoughts & settle on a Mickey Mouse theme. I can still use the bright colors that I had picked out for the CG party and I have no doubt that all the little kids will still be diggin Mickey Mouse!

I've got an idea that I can affordably decorate with. I've seen this done many times on other blogs & now I'm going to give it a shot! With some felt, scissors & thread, I have everything I need on hand. Score!
Polka dot garland! Throw in some balloons & we have a party!
(Just don't expect my spread to be as tidy & perfect as the party picture - wow!)

These are made with card stock & are stitched together.

I'm pretty sure these are made with felt
but doesn't look like the circles were stitched together.

I'm loving these t-shirts & would like to make something similar for Eli. He has a few solid color t-shirts in his summer stash so again, my wallet wins (that is IF I can get it made in time)!!

Many of you know that we have so much to celebrate on Sunday!  And for those of you that don't know what I'm talking about, I hope to share a post about Eli & walk down memory lane with you later this week.
Until then, I better get to work!!!

P.S. Feel free to share your party ideas with me in the comments!!

Pajama Pants Project

This weekend was such a productive weekend for me! I am SO excited about all the sewing I got done along with all my other weekend "chores." Friends, this RARELY happens at our house. On top of all of that, my husband let me sleep in till 9:30 on Friday AND Saturday!!
HE deserves a pair of elephant pajama pants, don't you think?!

I've been following Celebrate The Boy Month with MADE & Made by Rae

Really, you HAVE to check out the amazingness they've featured this month.
I'm sad that it's ended!
It's been incredible to see what people are making for their boys!
One of the things MADE featured is a tutorial/free download-able PDF pattern for these "basic pants."

I had some flannel fabric that I bought about a year & a half ago. My intentions were to make a baby blanket out of it, but that never happened :(
SO, this weekend I decided to make some pajama pants for my big boys out of it.

These pants are awesome & don't look "homemade" at all...except that I didn't think to pay attention to the layout of the elephant pattern as I was cutting the pieces out. Oh well...lesson learned!
The pants are lower in the front & roomier in the booty & fit great!
For Caleb, I added 1 1/2" to the top of all 4 pieces & 1" to the outside edges of all 4 pieces. As for the hem, I just measured a pair of his regular wind-pants & based the measurement on that.
For Keston, I followed the measurments from the pattern and measured the hem based on how they fit him. I had to take them up quite a bit...but as long as these pants hold up, I can let the hem out as he grows (that is, if I'm that ambitous).
I should also add that each pair took me approx 3 hours to make. Now, I don't know if that's normal...but that's how long it took me. I was happy with that.

Seeing Caleb & Keston wearing something I made for them makes me smile!

Looks like they love them too - doesn't stop them from acting normal at all!

It's elementary my dear, Watson! Elementary!

"We need to solve this mystery!"

Caleb loves to dress up and pretend! Lately he's been into solving "mysteries." It's really quite fun to see him use his imagination. This child is so creative! He blows me away with his ideas sometimes. And seriously, how cute is he in his detective get-up?! He put it together himself.

He's got his magnifying glass, his thinking cap, & his clue notebook. What more could he need? Oh yeah, a mystery!

I wonder how I can make this educational for him...maybe send my little detective out on a hunt for a certain letter or amount of something...hmmm...Do YOU have any ideas?

Morning Glory Muffin Recipe

What's the story, Morning Glory?
Oh, you're hungry you say? Well, well, well...step into my kitchen!

My days can be pretty crazy as I manage my 3 little guys. But if I've got a batch of these made, it's bound to be a good day (for me anyway). These muffins are choc full of goodness & are also GOOD FOR YOU! My boys & my husband love these as much as I do too. I like to double & sometimes triple the recipe so I can freeze a dozen or so for later. I often have one for my breakfast, but I also have been known to snag one (or two) with a glass of milk for my lunch while I prepare a meal for my 4 & 2 year olds & shovel pureed green beans into my infant's mouth. Busy mommas need to try this recipe!

Ingredients

  • 1 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour

  • 1/4 cup milled flax seed

  • 1 cup white sugar

  • 2 tsp baking soda

  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 2 cups shredded carrots (2-3 carrots)

  • 1/2 cup raisins

  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

  • 1/2 cup unsweetened flaked coconut

  • 1 apple - peeled, cored and shredded (McIntosh or Granny Smith work GREAT! Gala doesn't)

  • 3 eggs

  • 1 cup vegetable oil OR 1 cup unsweetened applesauce

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

  • Directions
    1. Preheat your oven to 350 F & grease your muffin cups or line with paper muffin liners.

    2. In a large bowl mix together the flours, flax, sugar, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.

    3. Stir in the carrot, raisins, nuts, coconut, and apple.

    4. In a separate bowl, beat together eggs, oil, and vanilla.

     5. Stir egg mixture into the carrot/flour mixture, just until moistened.

     6. Scoop batter into prepared muffin cups & bake in your oven for 18-20 minutes.

Mmmmm, your kitchen is going to smell so good! This recipe is not only fantastic but it also leaves a lot of room for substitutions & deviations. I've used all whole wheat flour before, omitted the flax if I'm out, added crasins, pineapple, mashed banana, or nuts.  So you see, I don't always follow this recipe to a T. But that's one reason I love it so much! I've seen other versions of it on allrecipes.com and my Gram has a recipe much like this one as well. I'd bet that they're all pretty yummy!

If you give them a try, I'd love to know what you think!

    ...what's YOUR favorite muffin?

What I Wore Wednesday - Tardy!

Sorry! I'm tardy for What I Wore Wednesday. This week was rather crazy...and truthfully I wore my yoga pants & a t-shirt most days. I wore my baby a lot this week too since he & his big brother's have been down in the dumps. Dang RSV! Several days looked like this (that's actually a really cute top I have on, but you can't tell - it's okay if you're distracted by the plaid wallpaper...):
    Eli's favorite place to be.
He's such a cuddle bug - especially when he's not feeling well.

As for the days when I wasn't wearing the Moby Wrap or my comfy yoga pants, this is all I took pics of...and it's nothing exciting...at all. Matter of fact, I think those jeans were from college and nearly everything else is at least a year old. woohoo...
Sorry to disappoint anyone. I did just get an order from Kohls.com & hit up the Goodwill last week so hopefully my WIWW will be a little more fun next week...maybe...

I still can't get used to taking a serious picture of myself. It's just more fun to be a nerd! (& NO that bump is not another baby...that's actually baby leftovers...ugh!)

I'm linking up at The Pleated Poppy - For more exciting posts of cute people wearing really cute clothes, check it out :) (pssst, she's also hosting a giveaway for this cute top from Nations Outfitters!)

    RSV

There's nothing like that knot in your gut when your doctor is telling you what's wrong with your baby...be it something big or small...that knot is there.  Our sweet sweet baby Eli is 11 months old now and in his short life he's never had to be on antibiotics. He's usually very healthy but all winter long he's has had a cough that has come & gone. Friday the cough started again, but this time it was different...and very persistent. Then the runny nose started along with fever that was steady around 101.4. He was restless for naps & through the night...so when Monday rolled around I debated whether this was "just another cold" or reason to see the doctor. So I called & the nurse squeezed me for an afternoon appointment.

I took my cuddle bug in and he was doing great. He wasn't fussy...matter of fact he was pretty smiley and social with the strangers in the waiting room. After the routine check in of weight, pulse, "what cha here for" mumbo-jumbo we got to see one of our favorite people - literally. She's fantastic! I hate having sick kids but I sure love taking them to her...even if she is a 35 minute drive for us & in the ghetto...no joke, it really is. She loves our family and is a great support to us! She's like the Mary Poppins of pediatrics. We LOVE her to pieces! So anyway, she looks Eli over & is suspicious of RSV...yup, there's that knot...then she checks his ears...double ear infection...ugh, twisted knot. Then today his lab results came back. It's official. He has RSV. That knot has turned into a well of tears. My poor baby is sick. We need to get him better. Now.

So now we begin 10 days of antibiotics twice a day and breathing treatments 3 times a day for five days...this is in addition to the multivitamin + iron and the regular probiotics...oh and Tylenol and Ibuprofen too.
He LOVES his breathing treatments, can't cha tell?!
    ...

And to top things off...look who else is showing the exact same symptoms as his baby brother...there's that knot in my stomach again. Lord, help me help my babies!
RSV is very contagious...pretty sure Andy & I picked it up too...we're feeling it.

Needless to say, it was a long night last night...Keston has me really worried so we are watching him very closely.
I called the Dr today & she wants Keston on breathing treatments 3 x's a day too. But look at him. He thinks breathing treatments are great (for now)!  I'm a little concerned with how much fun he has with his "moker" machine!

    Small Ruffled Tote

Here she is! My Saturday night project!
I have an awful problem...I make a lot of things and don't finish them....a lot of things. So this tote that you're looking at is quite an accomplishment. I started it AND finished it in one evening!

This here is how the project was inspired. If you want to make a sewer/crafter VERY happy, send her a box of fun fabrics for Christmas! One of my bestie-best-best friends (ASHLEY) sent me this box of fabric...along with a cute mug & hot cocoa :) Isn't that THE BEST?!? I've made some little things here & there with the fabric, but this is the first REAL project I've COMPLETED.

It's so girly - I'm totally diggin it!
I kept it simple - no pockets inside or snap - might regret not adding the snap.
    I'm loving those tattered ruffles!
Let's talk about my new girl, shall we? I hit a few bumps in the road since the tote was kinda-sorta an experiment but it turned out pretty nice. The inside was supposed to be the outside & the the straps & ruffle were supposed to be the opposite fabric, but I kept truckin & went with it! I've been trying to come up with my own tote - one that's not from a pattern or someone elses tutorial & it seems like when I've tried, the straps are too long or the bag is too wide & not tall enough or vice versa. SO I think I hit the spot! I added the ruffle on a whim - and I'm glad I did. It's pretty & it's perfect!

    What do you think?!
